HUNTS POINT — A woman was fatally hit by a commercial dump truck Thursday morning in the South Bronx as she was coming from a laundromat, police said.

Floria Burton, 55, was crossing the streets at Bryant and Seneca Avenues near her home around 8:30 a.m. with a laundry cart when the truck hit her, according to the NYPD.

She was taken to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition and died around 9 a.m., officials said.

Witnesses said she was on the phone and did not see the truck coming when she was hit, according to police.

"She was under the front wheel," said 56-year-old Robin Walbey, who saw the accident. "People were yelling, 'You hit somebody! You hit somebody!' Then he went in reverse and hit her again. It was horrible. I couldn't believe it."

"She was a really good family lady," Walbey continued. "She just got a new job. She was a very kindhearted person."

The 44-year-old truck driver stayed on the scene after the accident, and although he said he was distracted and looking off to the right while driving, officers do not suspect criminality at this point, and it is unlikely that he will be arrested, police said.
