ST. GEORGE — The popular St. George Greenmarket will stay open year-round instead of closing for the winter months.

The market, which is open on Saturdays at St. Mark's Place and Hyatt Street, used to shut down from November until summer but due to demand from the community and farmers, market operators GrowNYC decided to keep it open all year starting Jan. 2.

"It's a really popular market for us on Staten Island," said Laura McDonald, spokeswoman for GrowNYC. "[The community] let us know year after year they were interested in having a year-round market and the farmers were excited."

This year, the market will close for the holidays on Dec. 26, and re-open to its new year-round schedule on Jan. 2 with the hours switching to 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., McDonald said.

Farmers that sell at the market include American Seafood, DiPaola Turkeys, Jersey Farm Produce Vegetables and Staten Island Family Farm Vegetables.

St. George Greenmarket will become the only one in the borough to remain open all year, with the Staten Island Mall Greenamarket set to close for the winter on Nov. 21.
