Men Attack Stranger Inside Chelsea Diner After Street Argument, Police Say

CHELSEA — Three men attacked a stranger inside a Chelsea diner early on Sunday morning, after a street argument, according to police. 

At around 5:00 a.m. the 31-year-old man victim crossing the street headed to the Chelsea Square Restaurant, at 368 W. 23rd St., when he exchanged words with the driver of a passing car, he told police.

The driver and two other men followed him inside and beat him up while one man held him down, according to police. 

"Why you spit on me?" waiter Peter Panagiotis, 61, who was working at the time of the incident, heard one of the men ask at the door.

Then the man started landing punches on the victim, who Panagiotis said was clearly drunk.

"When they start the punches, right away I called [the police]," he said. "I was screaming in my phone."

"Late night, weekend, drunk people," he said. "This guy was drunk and he initiated the brawl."

No arrests have been made in the incident, according to police.
