SUNNYSIDE — A woman scared off a would-be robber who tried to snatch her cellphone out of her hands at a subway station in Queens earlier this month, according to the NYPD.

The victim was chatting on her phone in the stairwell of the 7 train station at 40th Street on Oct. 12 shortly after 1 a.m. when a stranger walked up to her from behind and tried to steal her phone, police said.

When the woman screamed and refused to give it up, the man fled the station empty-handed, police said.

The suspect is described as standing 5-foot-6 and weighing 130 pounds. He was wearing a gray waist-length hooded jacket with an orange liner, dark jeans and a dark baseball cap, according to police.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.
