MIDTOWN — Winter’s upon us — and it’s only October.

The city is bracing for record-breaking cold this weekend as a cool-air mass sweeping down from Canada will plunge temperatures into the 30s at night, forecasters said.

The low Saturday night is expected to dip to 39 degrees, while Sunday night will bottom out at 35 degrees — challenging the record for that date, according to the National Weather Service.

“Those would be the coldest temperatures we’ve seen this season,” NWS spokesman Tim Morrin said. “It’s a brief shot of some cooler air. It’ll be here for a few days and move away.”

The highs Saturday and Sunday will only reach 57 and 51 degrees, respectively.

The weekend's nighttime temperatures are significantly cooler than the average low of about 50 degrees for this time of year.

The record low for Oct. 17 is 33 degrees, set in 1886, while the Oct. 18 record is 35, marked in 1974.
