PROSPECT-LEFFERTS GARDENS — Go for the pastry, stay for the party.
A new dessert shop in the neighborhood, Desserts by Michael Allen, will give away free beignets at its Nostrand Avenue store Thursday night to coincide with a free jazz performance, the owners said.
“It’s our way of saying thank you to the community,” said confection expert and owner Michael Allen who opened the shop last month at 1149 Nostrand Ave.
The show will feature Patience Higgins and the Sugar Hill Quartet from Harlem, hosted by Allen’s wife, jazz singer Marvel Allen.
The performance and beignet giveaway will take place between 7 and 10 p.m. Thursday, Allen said, and will feature the New Orleans-style square, powdered doughnut-like pastries (a favorite for Allen's family, who are from Louisiana) and house-made root beer on draft.
Allen plans to make the jazz performances a regular thing at the shop, perhaps inviting musical Prospect-Lefferts Gardens residents to join in.
