Here's the Village Halloween Parade Route (And How to Avoid The Crowds)

Each year, anywhere from 50,000 to 60,000 people take part in the Village Halloween Parade, which this year celebrates its 42nd run.

The 2015 parade takes place on Sixth Avenue from Spring Street to 16th Street on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 7-11 p.m. If you want to participate, observe or simply miss the event, DNAinfo New York tells you how.

► FOR PARADE WATCHERS

The parade starts at Sixth Avenue and Spring Street, and continues north until 16th Street where it ends.

The streets are most crowded between Bleecker and 14th streets, according to event organizers. They recommend arriving early if you want to score a good spot there, or trying another place along the route.

Taking the subway to the parade:

• B, D, F and M train riders, can take the train to the 23rd, 14th or West 4th St. stations If you take the 1, 2 or 3 train, you can exit at the 23rd, 18th, 14th, Sheridan Sq. or Houston St. stations.

• The Spring St. off of the A, C and E trains is the closest station to the parade's line up area. A, C and E train riders can also exit at the West 4th St. station and walk to the route.

• L train riders should exit at the Sixth Ave. station.

Taking the bus to the parade:

• Buses on Sixth Ave. will be re-routed just after 6 p.m. on Oct. 31. Plan to take alternative bus routes.

If you want to watch the parade on TV:

• The parade will be broadcast live on NY1 from 8-9:30 p.m. on Oct. 31.

► FOR PARADE PARTICIPANTS

• Anyone wearing a costume can participate in the parade. Head to the line-up area at Sixth Avenue and Canal Street from 7-9 p.m. to walk in the parade.

• Participants can only enter the line-up area from Sullivan Street, East Broome Street and Canal Street.

• During the parade, participants will follow the crowd up Sixth Avenue toward 16th Street, where the parade ends. 

► FOR PARADE AVOIDERS

Parade-related closures begin at 10 a.m. on Oct. 31 and last until after the parade wraps up.

Morning street closures:

Starting at 10 a.m. the following street will be affected by closures: 

• Dominick Street west of Sixth Avenue will be closed to traffic.

• Sullivan Street between Spring Street and Sixth Avenue will be closed to traffic.

• Parking lanes on the north and south sides of Spring Street between Sixth Avenue and Varick Street will be closed.

Afternoon street closures:

Starting at 1 p.m. the following streets will be affected by closures:

• Spring and Broome Streets west of Sixth Avenue will be completely closed.

Starting at 4 p.m. the following streets will be affected by closures:

• 16th to 18th streets between Sixth and Seventh avenues will be closed for parade vehicles

• Soho Square Park will be cleared of all people not participating in the parade.

Evening street closures:

Starting at 5:45 p.m. the following streets will be affected by closures:

• Sixth Avenue between Spring and Watts streets is closed.

Starting at 6:30 p.m. the following streets will be affected by closures:

• Sixth Avenue from Spring Street to 18th Street will be closed.
