LOWER MANHATTAN — A woman riding a southbound 1 train during Tuesday morning rush hour was robbed by a man who threatened to cut her if she didn't comply, police said.

The thief approached the 40-year-old woman as they rode a southbound 1 train approaching Chambers Street at about 8:45 a.m. on Oct. 6, police said.

The woman told police that the man, described as in his late 40s, demanded: "I need some money. I can cut you, you know."

She handed over $15, but he persisted. "I need more than this," he told her, according to police reports. She then gave him a $20, she told police.

The robber told her to move to the adjoining train car, and she followed instructions. At the next stop, Chambers and West Broadway, she got off the train and called police.

Police were still investigating the crime.
