FINANCIAL DISTRICT — A man was repeatedly punched by robbers who stole his wallet from his backpack last week, police said.

The 35-year-old victim told authorities he felt someone tugging on his backpack on Sunday, then saw a young man and woman grabbing his wallet from his bag's side pocket, according to a criminal complaint from the Manhattan DA's office.

The victim chased after the thieves once they took his wallet, and one of the robbers, 18-year-old Salvatore Derogatis began to punch him.

Police were able to arrest Derogatis at Chambers and Church streets, about 5:40 p.m., but his female accomplice ran off.

Derogatis was charged with second-degree robbery and second-degree attempted robbery. His bail was set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond. He's due back in court on Sept. 25.

Derogatis's lawyer did not immediately return request for comment.
