Brooklyn Books, Arts, Photos and Design Expo

Where: Brooklyn Expo Center, 79 Franklin St., Greenpoint
When: Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

More than 140 dealers will be selling and displaying their rare books, prints and photos this weekend in Greenpoint. Browse the goods, and stick around for readings and live music for both adults and kids.

Photoville

Where: Brooklyn Bridge Park, Columbia Waterfront District
When: Friday, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday, 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Brooklyn’s popular outdoor photo exhibit that turns shipping containers into photo galleries will host its final weekend of workshops, talks, food, drink and photography. For more information on this weekend’s activities, visit this website.

BK Oktoberfest

Where: Die Koelnere Bierhalle, 84 St. Marks Place, Park Slope
When: Various times, Friday Sept. 18 to Oct. 18

Live music, beer pong contests, a home-brew competition, 30 beers on tap and the best sausages in Brooklyn are included at this month-long Oktoberfest celebration curated by Crown Heights music venue Friends and Lovers and hosted by Park Slope beer hall, Die Koelnere. Friday, September 18

Emo Night Brooklyn

Where: Brooklyn Bowl, 61 Wythe Ave., Williamsburg
When: Doors 11:30 p.m.; show 11:59 p.m.

Bring out the black and get ready for old feels. People who had Brand New, Say Anything and Taking Back Sunday on repeat on their iPod playlists in high school should check out this flashback night at Brooklyn Bowl, where DJ’s will be pumping out ‘00s emo tunes all night.

Free Fall Friday Admission at Brooklyn Historical Society

Where: Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont St., Brooklyn Heights
When: 5 p.m. to 9 p.m

Brooklyn Historical Society is offering free admission on the third Friday of every month from September to November. On Sept. 18, Oct. 16 and Nov. 20, the center will remain open till 9 p.m. and visitors will be able to enter for free from 5 p.m. onwards. ‘MP3 Experiment’ in Prospect Park

Where: Prospect Park, exact location TBD
When: 7 p.m.

Join the prank group Improv Everywhere in this synched, interactive, flash-mob-esque event in which participants listen to pre-recorded instructions on headphones and follow directions to create “performance art meets comedy,” said creator Charlie Todd. The popular “MP3 Experiment” has taken place annually since 2004, but has never come to Prospect Park, he said. RSVP for the free event here.

Subway Series Exhibit Opening Reception    

Where: The Bishop Gallery, 916 Bedford Ave., Bed-Stuy
When: 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Check out mosaic portraits and messages created from old MTA materials in this collaboration from artists Al Diaz and Juan Carlos Pinto. See images made from discarded MetroCards and passages cut from “WET PAINT” signs. Diaz is known for his graffiti tags with the late Jean-Michel Basquiat and will debut his new work at the month-long exhibit.

Saturday, September 19

Brooklyn Book Festival Children’s Day

Where: MetroTech Commons in Downtown Brooklyn
When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Readings, costumed characters and music are geared to entertain kids aged 2 to 11 at this day festival.

“Spice World” sing-a-long and costume party

Where: Videology, 308 Bedford Ave., Williamsburg
When: 9:30 p.m.

The Spice Girls may have gotten a worst actresses award for their performance in “Spice World,” but that just makes it endearing. Videology calls it “one of the most enjoyable bad movies ever made,” and people who agree should claim a Spice and come ready to zig-a-zig-ah.

Cops vs. Kids DJ Battle

Where: Brownsville Recreation Center, 1555 Linden Blvd., Brownsville
When: 11 a.m.

Young DJs (ages 14 to 21) will show off their skills at this competition, which will also feature the DJ stylings of the NYPD’s Lt. Acu Rhodes, also known as a DJ Ace. Contestants will take home prizes for their prowess at beat juggling, scratching and blending. The free event is being organized by the NYPD’s Patrol Borough Brooklyn North and Taylor-Made Productions.

Pop-Up Cat Cafe

Where: 354 Myrtle Ave., Fort Greene
When: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Lounge around with cats and kittens looking for adoption at Brooklyn’s first-ever “Cat Cafe,” located at a soon-to-be pet store in Fort Greene. “The Cat’s Meow,” as the new pop-up is called, costs $5 per half hour. Children 3 years old and under are free.

 

Sunday, September 20

The Best Grilled Sandwich in Brooklyn Competition

Where: The Amazing Gardens, Columbia and Carroll streets
When: 3 p.m.

The Amazing Garden’s popular grilled sandwich fest is back for its fifth year in the neighborhood, with three local Brooklyn restaurants competing for “best” in the borough. This year’s competition will feature chefs from Egg, Strong Place and Jalopy Tavern. NY1’s Roger Clark will host the event. Tickets are priced at $15 and all proceeds will support the garden.

Brooklyn Book Festival    

Where: Borough Hall Plaza, Court and Joralemon St., Downtown Brooklyn
When: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This reader’s paradise features an all-day program of discussions with authors like novelists Jonathan Lethem and Edwidge Danticat, tv writer David Simon, the economist Jospeh Stiglitz and the poet Marie Howe, among many others.

Red Hook Regatta

Where: Louis Valentino Jr. Park, Red Hook
When: 4 p.m.

A 3-D printed motorized boat race is challenging teams to transport “cargo” from the beach at Valentino Park to three points along the pier. The event is a collaboration between Pioneer Works and the Red Hook Initiative’s Digital Stewards.

Gowanus Public Art Walking Tour

Where: Old Stone House, 336 Third St., Park Slope
When: 11 a.m.

City Councilman Brad Lander and local arts organizations will host this tour of public art in Gowanus funded by a grant from Lander. This free tour starts at the Old Stone House and goes to sites in Gowanus, including a new mural overlooking the Gowanus Canal, and a sculpture that doubles as seating at Ennis Playground.

The Laundromat Project Field Day

Where: Locations throughout Bedford-Stuyvesant
When: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Your local laundromat transforms into a community hub for art this weekend as nonprofit The Laudromat Project celebrates local culture and history. Family-friendly art workshops and walking tours will be hosted in public spaces and local businesses including Sincerely Tommy, Marmy Laundromat, and 462 Halsey Community Garden.
