LIRR Service Disrupted After Train Derailment, MTA Says

By Aidan Gardiner | September 16, 2015 8:07am | Updated on September 16, 2015 11:09am

NEW YORK CITY — Long Island Rail Road riders service disruptions Wednesday as crews try to fix damaged track after freight cars derailed near Hicksville a day before, officials said.

New York and Atlantic Railway freight cars were still blocking two tracks served by the Ronkonkoma and Port Jefferson lines after derailing Tuesday afternoon, according to MTA officials.

"LIRR personnel are continuing to work around-the-clock to re-rail the derailed freight cars and repair hundreds of feet of damaged track and third rail," according to an MTA statement.

The LIRR suspended service between Hicksville in Mineola at 10:30 a.m., but riders can take shuttle buses, officials said.

The MTA hopes to restore some rail service by the evening rush, but said it would remain limited for the forseeable future.
