BROOKLYN — A screaming woman scared off a man who tried to rape her, wrapped an electrical cord around her neck and tried to cut her clothes off with a knife in Cobble Hill Tuesday, police said.

The 45-year-old woman was sitting on a bench in front of 143 Smith St., near Bergen Street, about 5 a.m., when the suspect struck up a conversation and offered to buy her cigarettes and soda, NYPD officials said.

The suspect, who wore a studded black leather vest and black cowboy boots, walked with her to a Rite Aid at 120 Court St., near Atlantic Avenue, and were caught on video, officials said.

They left, walked south to Pacific and Court streets where the suspect attacked her, police said.

He tried to cut off her clothes and choked her with a electrical cord, officials said.

She screamed and he fled the scene, police said. She was evaluated at an area hospital, an NYPD spokesman said.

The suspect is about 30, 5 feet 4 inches, police said.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
