MIDTOWN — Commuters can expect delays and cancelations on the LIRR during the evening commute, according to the MTA.

Two cars of a 16-car freight train derailed west of the Hicksville Station at about 1:10 p.m Tuesday. The train was blocking one of two tracks shared by the Ronkonkoma and Port Jefferson branches, causing the LIRR to operate over just one track between Westbury and Hicksville, the MTA said.

There were no injuries and no hazardous material was being transported, according to the agency.

The agency canceled about one-third of its normal eastbound rush hour service with the majority of those cancelations affecting the Ronkonkoma and Port Jefferson lines. The MTA also said that some Long Island-bound trains will bypass Carle Place and Westbury.

All service from Port Jefferson, Huntington and Ronkonkoma to Jamaica has been canceled between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The LIRR will continue to operate with reduced service after 8 p.m. as crews work to move the train and repair the damaged rails.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation, an MTA spokesman said.
