BROOKLYN — When a student is being picked on, finding out the school's history with bullying isn't an easy task for parents.

DNAinfo New York reported last week that there were roughly 7,000 instances of bullying at public schools reported to the state in 2013 to 2014.

Some Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens schools appear to follow a citywide trend of failing to report incidents of bullying. In those schools, more than 20 percent of students say they have witnessed bullying.

For example, the School for International Studies at 284 Baltic St. reported no incidents in 2014 while 36 percent of students said bullying occurred most or all the time at the school.

The cases of bullying are recorded and reported to the state Education Department through two databases — the first one is VADIR, or Violent and Disruptive Incident Reporting and a database by the Dignity for all Students Act that was implemented by the state in 2012 to address biased-based bullying and cyberbulllying.

But evidence is also collected from students in the sixth to 12th grades through surveys handed out by the Department of Education.

Most elementary schools in the neighborhoods, including P.S. 29, P.S. 146, P.S. 58 and Success Academy Cobble Hill, had no incidents of bullying recorded. At P.S. 32, located at 317 Hoyt St., one incident was reported to the VADIR database.

At Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies, located at 610 Henry St., 21 percent of student said bullying occurred most or all the time. The school also reported 28 incidents to the VADIR database and 10 to DASA.

At M.S. 442, also located at 317 Hoyt St., 24 percent of students said they've witnessed bullying at the school. They had 12 incidents recorded in the VADIR database and only one to DASA.

Brooklyn School for Global Studies, at 284 Baltic St., saw 29 percent of students reporting persistent bullying at the school. The school had 15 incidents, according to VADIR and one, according to DASA.
