Your Last Beach Weekend of the Season

Where: Rockaway Beach

Summer did NOT end on Labor Day. Thanks to a boost from the City Council to the Parks Department's budget, the city's beach season has been extended through Sept. 13 — almost as if they were predicting this heat wave that persisted through the month. The water is warm, and it's your last chance to enjoy the ocean with a lifeguard on duty, which is the only time you should. Beaches are open for swimming from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

LIC One Act Festival

Where: The Secret Theatre, 4402 23rd St., Long Island City

The Secret Theatre will present 25 one-act plays, selected from more than 100 submissions and performed over several days through the end of next week. The audience will vote for their favorite performances, and the top eight shows will compete for titles like "Best Actor" and "Best Director" during a final round on Sept. 19. Show times and dates this weekend vary; tickets are $18. A full schedule can be found here.

Friday, Sept. 11

A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald

Where: York College Performing Arts Center, 94-20 Guy R. Brewer Blvd., Jamaica

Enjoy this free concert honoring the life of Ella Fitzgerald, who lived in Southeast Queens. Singer and actress Tina Fabrique, who portrayed the "First Lady of Song" in the musical "ELLA" will sing songs from Fitzgerald's repertoire. The event is sponsored by The Healing Arts Initiative, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting arts and culture. The concert runs from 2 to 4 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 12

Sidewalk Flea Market

Where: Community United Methodist Church, 81-10 35th Ave., Jackson Heights

This multi-vendor market will feature antiques, collectibles, vintage items as well as kitchenware, jewelry and records, organizers said. Peruse the aisles and find a treasure. The market's open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fifth Annual Honey Fest

Where: Beach 97th Street concessions, Rockaway Beach

Get sweet on this annual festival that features workshops, arts, crafts and lots of vendors selling local honey. There's whipped honey, hot honey, honey in big jars and honey in little jars, and things made out of honey. Stock up for the year. Runs from 11 a.m. to sunset.

Queen of Astoria Basketball Tournament

Where: Astoria Park basketball courts, Astoria

Hit the courts with your neighbors in this basketball tournament hosted by local blog Queen of Astoria. Teams of five will compete for a chance to win gift bags, while participants will score a free t-shirt and celebrate with an after-party at Hellgate on the Park. Registration is $20. Games start at 2 p.m.

Kew Gardens Flea Market

Where: LIRR North parking lot, 82-60 Austin St., Kew Gardens

Check out this flea market in Kew Gardens, which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and donates all vendor fees to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center's pediatric department. You will also be able to adopt a dog or cat, as Heavenly Angels and Tuff Tails animal rescue groups will be there from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. A rain date is scheduled for Sept. 19.

Hands-On History: Founding Fathers

Where: King Manor Museum, 150-03 Jamaica Ave., Jamaica

Celebrate the 228th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution by listening to stories about the document and its history. Kids will also get a chance to make wigs so they can look like a founding father, and they can sign a replica of the document during this free event, which runs from noon to 3 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 13

Free Admission and Live Music at The Noguchi Museum

Where: 9-01 33rd Rd., Long Island City

The Noguchi Museum, dedicated to the work of artist and designer Isamu Noguchi, hosts regular "community days" with free admission. Sunday's will include activities for children and adults, a public tour at 2 p.m. and a performance at 3 p.m. by cellist Ashley Bathgate, part of the museum's music series with performing arts organization Bang on a Can.
