BEDFORD-STUYVESANT  — A corrections officer shot and killed a vicious dog that attacked a man in Bedford-Stuyvesant on Tuesday afternoon, officials and witnesses said.

The incident took place on Herkimer Place near Nostrand Avenue, about 1:30 p.m., an NYPD spokeswoman said.

A witness at the scene said two men were walking together with the dog when the animal lunged at one of them.

The corrections officer shot the dog while it was in the middle of an attack, according to police.

The animal was dead at the scene and it is unclear how many times it had been shot.

“The officer had no choice but to shoot,” said a man named Alva, 59, who declined to give his full name.

The victim was screaming for help, he added.

The man was taken to Methodist Hospital, an FDNY spokesman said.
