FORT WADSWORTH — Three people were charged with possession of a gun after police stopped a car at the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge toll plaza suspecting the driver was drunk, prosecutors said.
Abraham Vargas, 24, was stopped driving a 2001 Honda Odyssey on the Staten Island side of the bridge at about 3:50 a.m. Sunday and police said he had bloodshot eyes and slurred his speech, prosecutors said.
"I'm coming from Brooklyn, I had a Corona," Vargas told police, according to court papers. "I'm on my way home."
The officer found a loaded .32 caliber semi-automatic pistol in the middle compartment of the car and arrested Vargas and his two passengers, two women aged 17 and 18.
Vargas was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while ability impaired, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm at his Monday arraignment, the Staten Island District Attorney's office said.
His bail was set at $5,000 and he's due back in court on Friday, according to online court records. His lawyer did not respond to a request for comment.
