INWOOD — Inwood may soon have a dog run that is just right for the neighborhood’s smallest pups.

Inwoof, an advocacy group for local dog owners, hopes that an area for smaller-breed dogs will be added to Homer's Run in Inwood Hill Park in the coming months, thanks to funds secured by City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez.

Rodriguez dedicated $6,000 for the project, based on Parks Department estimates of what the project would cost, said Inwoof president Jason McDowell in a post to the group’s Facebook page.

Members of Inwoof have long been advocating for an addition to the dog run, which sees heavy use by local residents.

“A lot of dog owners in the neighborhood don’t feel comfortable bringing their little dogs into the run with larger breeds, so they just don’t use the run at all,” McDowell said. “This provides a place for people with small breeds, toy breeds and teacups breeds to let their dogs off-leash to run.”

McDowell said the new dog run would be added to the north end of Homer’s Run, which sits just past the baseball fields at the Isham Street entrance to the park.

It was not clear when construction on the project would begin.

“We have an upcoming meeting with Parks and the Councilman’s office where we’ll work to finalize construction plans,” McDowell said in an email.

He hopes to see the project completed by this winter.

A Parks Department spokeswoman said the agency has been in discussions with Inwoof about the run but hasn't yet committed to designating it for smaller dogs.

"We have recently been notified of the allocation for 'the maintenance  and upgrade' of the dog run and will be discussing with Inwoof to decide on how it can best be utilized," the spokeswoman said in reference to the $6,000 in city funds.

Local dog owners were excited by the news that this type of run may be in the works.

“Small dog run here we come!” wrote one commenter on McDowell’s Facebook post. “This is a great day.”

Rodriguez’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
