BUSHWICK — A man was in critical condition after getting beaten up outside a Bushwick restaurant on Monday, police said.

The 42-year-old victim got into an argument with a man just after 4 a.m. Monday in front of La Fogata, a Mexican restaurant at 1549 Gates Ave., police said.

The argument escalated, and the suspect started punching the victim in the face, police said. The victim fell backward and struck his head on the sidewalk, knocking him unconscious, police said.

He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where he remains in critical condition, police said.

The suspect fled eastbound on Gates Avenue, police said.

It was unclear if the men had been inside La Fogata. A person who picked up the phone at the eatery Tuesday hung up when asked about the incident.

The incident is under investigation, police added.
