UPPER EAST SIDE — The owner of a 70-year-old consignment shop on Madison Avenue is looking for the perfect name for her new pooch, and she's asking the public for help.

Laura Fluhr, owner of Michael's Consignment, took to social media earlier this month to ask customers and the public for suggestions as to what moniker to give her new 8-week-old silky terrier — after her dog, Rocky, who had accompanied her to the consignment shop each day for the past 17 years died in March.

Fluhr said she's particularly looking for a fun, two-syllable, masculine name for the pup.

"He’s kind of a cutesy little dog, we’re looking for a name that is kind of boyish or more masculine,” said Tammy Fluhr-Gates, Fluhr's daughter and business partner.

To spice up the request, the duo turned it into a contest: the person whose name she chooses will win a $25 gift certificate to use at their shop and website.

So far the consignment shop has gathered from its followers more than 200 names, including Cooper, Sirius, Max, Baxter, Copenhagen, and even designer names like Chanel, Prada and Gucci.

Fluhr decided to get her new puppy following the death of her dog Rocky, who was also a silky terrier and who had minded the storefront at Michael's for over a decade.

The reserved, but devoted canine always stayed close to Fluhr and became a familiar and adored sight to customers. So when he died earlier this year, his absence was apparent, and customers started encouraging her to get a new companion, Fluhr said.

"My dog comes to work with me every day and my customers are dog-oriented people," she said. "When rocky died, they were reaching out to me with sympathy and telling me to get another dog. Rocky was sort of part of a team here."

Fluhr found her new puppy on a breeder's website and visited him a few weeks ago. He will be picked up on Sunday and Fluhr will announce the winning name on Sept. 1, she said.

"It's a big responsibility and a lot of work, so I have excited anxiety," she said. "To have another baby in the house again, it's going to be ... oh my god!"

For those who want to participate in the naming competition, Fluhr asked that they avoid using the names of her grandchildren: Austin, Max, Charlie, Chase, Emmy, Sophie, Braydon and Avery.

And if more than one person suggests the winning name, the person who submitted it first will receive the prize, Fluhr said.

Michael's Consignment, at 1041 Madison Ave., offers a selection of designer clothing, accessories and shoes. Fluhr took over the family business from her father, Michael Kosof in 1986.

The store is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and is open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. The shop is closed on Sundays.
