THE BRONX — The man convicted of beating a 4-month-old puppy to death has been sentenced to one year behind bars, according to the Bronx District Attorney's office.

On July 31, a jury found 29-year-old Dwayne Gentles guilty of having tortured and killed Brandy, a pit bull puppy, in December 2012.

Brandy was unable to walk and barely conscious a few days before Christmas, and when Gentles took her to a veterinary emergency room, doctors advised him to have her humanely euthanized, the Bronx DA's office said.

The puppy's injuries included 13 broken ribs, two broken femurs, broken teeth and a fractured jaw that prevented her from eating.

Judge Miriam Best's sentence of one year in jail was the maximum allowable by law, and she signed an order banning him from owning any animals for the next year as well, the DA's office said.
