FORT GREENE — Missing: one beloved red and yellow go-kart.

A wooden handmade go-kart tied to a fence by its 10-year-old owner inside his Fort Greene front courtyard was stolen Monday afternoon, and the family has made flyers to post in the neighborhood in hopes of its safe return.

Oliver King, 10, parked the red-and-yellow go-kart he made with his father and brother three years ago inside the fence of his Cumberland Street home Monday — but some time between 4 and 5 p.m., it disappeared, his family said.

"I was upstairs," Oliver said, "and then I guess [my brother] came home and he told my mom the go-kart's gone."

Braden King, a commercial director and the kids' dad, said there were trash bags near where the go-kart was parked. He said he hopes the family's treasured vehicle wasn't mistook as abandoned, and might still be able to be returned.

The cart was always locked up in their former home nearby, but that since moving to the new location, they left it in the front of their home behind a low fence. The boys had been tying it to the fence with a rope, King said.

He thought the cart might need to be locked up, but trusted the neighborhood perhaps more than he should have, he said.

"It had been on my mind that it wasn't the best idea to be honest," he said.  "Of course, it's a little disappointing that somebody would take it."

The kids are holding out hope for the go-kart's return. King asks that anyone who has seen it or would like to return it to send an email to kart@truckstopmedia.com.

"Well, maybe someone will see it and call," Oliver said. "If they don't then we'll probably make another one."
