WILLIAMSBURG — A man who offered to help a pair of roommates move into their new Williamsburg apartment ended up taking off with more than $2,500 worth of property, police said.

The victims, a 26-year-old man and his roommate, said they were moving into their apartment on Meserole Street near Union Avenue on Saturday around 9 p.m. when a 35-year-old man approached and asked if they needed help, police said.

The suspect began to help the roommates move their property from a U-Haul truck into the building, but then disappeared about 30 minutes later, police said.

When the roommates returned from getting food, they realized that a backpack containing $2,775 worth of property — including a MacBook Pro and Bose headphones — was gone, police said.

The man was described as standing about 5-foot-9 and weighing 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing tan shorts, white sneakers and a white top, police said.

No one has been arrested for the incident.
