WEST VILLAGE — An elderly woman was robbed at a nursing home in the West Village, police said.

The 84-year-old woman was a patient at the VillageCare nursing home at 214 W. Houston St., police said. She was taken to a physical therapy appointment on July 30 about 11:30 a.m., and left her bag in her room.

When she returned, she was missing $1,015 in cash and a Macy's gift card that had been in her purse, police said.

Police said surveillance video showed a 42-year-old woman going into the room while the elderly woman was at physical therapy, shutting the door, and then coming out a short while later. No one else was seen on the surveillance video coming in or out of the room during that time, police said.

Officers later found $1,098 in cash and the $40 Macy's gift card in the bra of the 42-year-old woman, police said.

The woman is a medical professional, police said, but it was not immediately clear if she was employed by the nursing home. A supervisor at VillageCare did not immediately return a voicemail left for comment.

According to a New York State government directory, VillageCare is a nonprofit and this location has 105 beds and is 85 percent full as of June 10. Between June 2011 and May 2015, the state received 31 complaints regarding the nursing home, and it was last inspected by the state for re-certification in 2014.

The 42-year-old woman was charged with petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, court records show, both misdemeanors.

She was released without bail and is due back in court on Sept. 29. Her lawyer did not immediately respond to a voicemail left for comment.
