Wake and Bake Series at Nitehawk Cinema: “Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie”

Where: Nitehawk Cinema, 136 Metropolitan Ave., Williamsburg
When: 11:45 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday

This August brunch series at the bar/restaurant/cinema celebrates all things ganja. This weekend, check out 1980 film “Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie,” a tale of two LA stoners who try to find work. Hilarity ensues. Tickets cost $11.

PortSide Open Weekend

Where: Mary A. Whalen tanker, located in the Atlantic Basin, Red Hook 
When: 8 to 10 p.m. on Friday, noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday

Spend your weekend aboard a historic oil tanker in Red Hook with music, food drink and tours of the vessel. PortSide NewYork, a maritime nonprofit, is hosting an open weekend on Mary A. Whalen, a 77-year-old ship on which the organization is based. Visitors will also have a chance to relax with their own snacks, take-out or a bottle of wine during “TankerTime” on Saturday and Sunday between 6 and 10 p.m. aboard the vessel. Friday, Aug. 7

“How to Train Your Dragon 2” outdoor screening

Where: WNYC Transmitter Park, Kent Street and West Street, Greenpoint
When: 7 p.m.

Grab a blanket and bring kids to a free outdoor screening of this animated DreamWorks film. The film may be a sequel, but it’s not a bad one: It won a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film and was nominated in the same category at the Academy Awards.

Saturday, Aug. 8

TAMA Summerfest

Where: Tompkins Avenue between Hancock and Monroe avenues, Bed-Stuy
When: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Tompkins Avenue turns into one big, family-friendly party with dancing, music, food, arts, games, and more. A Tribe Called Quest’s Jarobi White and Brand Nubian’s Sadat X hit the stage at this year’s festivities and local vendors will set up shop along the commercial corridor. The free event lasts from 10 a.m. through 6 p.m.

2015 Von King Park Conservancy 5K Walk/Run

Where: Herbert Von King Park, 670 Lafayette Ave., Bed-Stuy        
When: 11 a.m.

Stretch those legs and take in the sights at Bed-Stuy’s Von King Park. Nonprofit 500 Men Making a Difference host their first 5K Walk/Run to benefit the Von King Park Conservancy. The event coincides with the organization’s 6th annual Men’s Day, where the community can gather for sports, chess, music and movies. Following the run, bring your water balloons and water guns for the “All White Water Fight” at noon.

tUnE-yArDs / Shabazz Palaces at Celebrate Brooklyn

Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Park Slope
When: 7:30 PM

Indie pop sensation tUnE-yArDs brings its rhythmic and improvisational live show to the park for a free concert. Experimental hip-hop group Shabazz Palaces open.

The Cityfox Experience at Brooklyn Mirage

Where: Brooklyn Mirage, 99 Scott Ave., East Williamsburg
When: 2 p.m. to late night

Saturday is one of the last chances for techno and house fans to check out a show by Cityfox at the tropical indoor-outdoor pop-up venue Brooklyn Mirage. DJs and artists like Stephan Bodzin, Nikita, YokoO and Jay Tripwire are scheduled to perform. Day and night tickets cost $60; just night tickets cost $45.

 Tales of Brer Rabbit

Where: South Oxford Park, South Oxford Street near Atlantic Ave., Fort Greene
When: 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Check out a free puppet show for kids based on the story of trickster Brer Rabbit, a notoriously naughty bunny.

Big Break Comedy Show

Where: Bluebird Cafe, 504 Flatbush Ave., Prospect-Lefferts Gardens
When: 8 p.m.

Louis Katz, Tim Dillon, Joel Kim Booster and Claudia Cogan will perform stand-up at this monthly comedy show at the Bluebird Cafe in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, hosted by local comedians Charlie Kasov and Tyler Fischer. Tickets are $5 at the door.


Sunday, Aug. 9

Force Majeure Vaudeville at Cobra Club

Where: The Cobra Club, 8 Wyckoff Ave., Bushwick
When: 9 p.m.

A funky monthly variety and freak show hits Cobra Club again on Sunday. Expect music, clowns, magic, burlesque and performers who’ve also been spotted in a Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum. Tickets cost $10.

Second Sundays at Pioneer Works

Where: Pioneer Works, 159 Pioneer St., Red Hook
When: 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Pioneer Works’ monthly event returns with live music, open studios and art exhibitions. Second Sundays on Aug. 9 will feature performances by The Westerlies and Janka Nabay. There is a $10 suggested donation.

Live Music at Parkside Plaza

Where: Ocean and Parkside avenues, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens
When: 1 to 3 p.m.

Local band the Axiom Addicts will play a free show on the Parkside Plaza on Sunday, next to the neighborhood’s brand new farmer’s market. The event is sponsored by the Inkwell Jazz Cafe and PLG Arts.
