WEST VILLAGE — The man who broke into a woman's apartment in the West Village and groped her as she slept has been arrested, the NYPD said.

Jeffrey Joseph, 35, of Staten Island, was charged Sunday night at the Special Victims Division's headquarters in East Harlem with burglary and sex abuse, police said.

Joseph is accused of breaking into a woman's apartment by climbing the fire escape of her building near West 10th Street and Hudson Street about 5 a.m. on July 30, police said.

The NYPD circulated information about the break-in last week, along with a photo of a shirtless man who they identified as their suspect.

They said the man they were looking for had climbed the fire escape and broken into a second-floor apartment, where a 43-year-old woman was sleeping.

The intruder grabbed the woman's rear end while she was sleeping, police said. When the woman woke up, the intruder fled.

The NYPD did not say how Joseph, who lives in New Dorp Beach, was identified or where he was arrested.

Another man was arrested for a separate early-morning burglary involving a fire escape in Greenwich Village's 6th Precinct last week. Police said he broke into a third-floor apartment on Jane Street on July 24, but fled empty-handed after he knocked over a vase and woke the tenants.
