Screening of the 1960 “Little Shop of Horrors”

Where: Al Oerter Recreation Center, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, 131-40 Fowler Ave., Flushing
When: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Parks Department is doing a free screening of this film as part of its "Arts, Culture and Fun City" series, which shows classic films such as the original “Little Shop of Horrors.” This black comedy horror flick is considered a cult classic and features Jack Nicholson as the dentist.

Coming Home Screening and Discussion: “Return”

Where: Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont St., Brooklyn Heights
When: 6 p.m.

See the 2011 film “Return” about a wife and mother returning from military service in the Middle East, followed by a discussion with David LaRocca, editor of “The Philosophy of War Films,” Iraq war veteran Phoebe Gavin and Edward Walsh, Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, 2002-2006. Admission is free but RSVP is encouraged.

Books Beneath the Bridge Readings of “St. Mazie” and “Spinster”

Where: Brooklyn Bridge, 334 Furman St., Brooklyn Heights
When: 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

PowerHouse Arena bookstore presents Jami Attenberg reading from “St. Mazie” and Kate Bolick reading from “Spinster.” Event is free but RSVP is appreciated.

In Conversation: Matt Zoller Seitz and Ramin Bahrani Discuss the Films of Oliver Stone

Where: Videology, 308 Bedford Ave. Williamsburg
When: 7 p.m.

New York magazine TV critic Matt Zoller Seitz and director Ramin Bahrani will be at Videology talking about the work of director, actor and screenwriter Oliver Stone, known for films such as “JFK,” “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” and “Any Given Sunday.” After the discussion, there will be a screening of his “Natural Born Killers,” a dark 1994 comedy about serial murderers. Tickets are $15.

Broadway Stands Up For Freedom

Where: NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, 566 LaGuardia Place, Greenwich Village
When: 7:30 p.m.

Stars from some of Broadway's hottest plays and musicals, including “Fun Home” and “Hand to God,” will perform at this benefit concert hosted by the New York Civil Liberties Union. The event will also honor the New York City public school students whose work on important civil liberties issues won awards in the NYCLU’s annual Freedom of Expression contest. Tickets are $60.

Tuesday, July 21

Networking Night at LIC Beer Project

Where: LIC Beer Project, 39-28 23rd St., Long Island City
When: 5 p.m.


Mix and mingle with members of the Long Island City business community at this event hosted by the LIC Partnership, and take a tour of the LIC Beer Project, the neighborhood’s newest brewery. Entry costs $15 for LIC Partnership members and $25 for non-members.

Bookish: Writers Talking with Nicole Kear

Where: Park Slope Public Library, 431 Sixth Ave. at Ninth Street in Park Slope
When: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Brooklyn novelist Amy Shearn interviews Nicole C. Kear, author of the memoir “Now I See You” about being told at age 19 that she was going blind. The event is free.

“(T)ERROR” screening, followed by Q&A with the director

Where: Nitehawk Cinema, 136 Metropolitan Ave. in Williamsburg
When: 7:30 p.m.

As part of a documentary screening series, Nitehawk will be showing “(T)ERROR,” a look at the relationship between individuals and the surveillance state in modern America. It follows an active FBI counterterrorism sting operation and won the special jury prize at Sundance. Viewers will be able to stay on after to have a Q&A with director David Felix Sutcliffe and two attorneys with Project C.L.E.A.R., a law enforcement accountability group. Tickets are $15.

Classical Music Concert Featuring Harp and Celist Duo

Where: Christ & St. Stephen's Church, 120 W. 69th St. on the Upper West Side
When: 7:30 p.m.

Harpist Elisabeth Remy Johnson, of the Atlanta Symphony, and cellist Dale Henderson are teaming up as a new duo called “Parsa Duo.” They will perform music by Bach, Bruch, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Ravel, and Saint-Saens, among others. Tickets are $20 at the door.

Swingtime Big Band Concert

Where: John Finley Walk (atop the East 86th Street mall)
When: 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Enjoy a swingtime band perform live while overlooking the East River. Free.

92nd Street Y’s Jazz In July

Where: 92nd Street YMCA (Lexington Avenue at 92nd Street)
When: 8 p.m.

At the first of six jazz concerts at the 92nd Street Y, listen to pianist Dick Hyman and clarinet player Anat Cohen play classic and swing standards. Tickets start at $52.

Wednesday, July 22

Opening for “You’ve Got Mail” Art Show

Where: Ground Floor Gallery, 343 Fifth St. in Park Slope
When: 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Ground Floor Gallery kicks off its summer show of art that’s been mailed to the gallery by artists near and far. The gallery will display all the submissions it received, as long as the works are the right size (they must be 4” by 6” unframed or 5” by 7” framed).

Outdoor Cinema at Socrates Sculpture Park

Where: Socrates Sculpture Park, 32-01 Vernon Blvd., Astoria
When: 7 p.m.

Take in a free movie outdoors at the park’s weekly summer screening, which will feature “Iron Crows,” a documentary that chronicles workers in Bangladesh involved in ship breaking, back-breaking work where they disassemble old ships.

"The Merchant of Venice" in the Park

Where: Unisphere, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, off the Grand Central, Corona
When: 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Bassanio is the young Venetian who wishes to win over the beautiful Portia of Belmont. It’s one of Shakespeare's darkest plays, and will be performed for free at the historic Unisphere in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.

Dinner at Maxwell’s for S.O.S. Brooklyn

Where: 259A Kingston Ave., Crown Heights
When: 7 p.m.

The anti-violence organization S.O.S. Brooklyn is putting on a night of games, raffles, music and food at Maxwell’s Restaurant to benefit the group, which aims to reduce gun violence within Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant. There's a $5 suggested donation for admission.

When: 6 to 9 p.m.

Join the City Museum and El Museo del Barrio for the free kick-off event in its Uptown Bounce summer series. Do the New York Hustle as Operator Emz & DJ Joey Carvello of Mobile Mondays spin classic vinyl 45s disco. Tour of “The Fence” in Brooklyn Bridge Park

Where: Begin at Jane’s Carousel, Brooklyn Bridge Park
When: 6 p.m.

Join the team behind United Photo Industries for an official tour of “The Fence,” a 1,250-foot outdoor photo installation in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The exhibit features work from 40 professional photographers.

Street Art and the Lower East Side

Where: Clemente Soto Velez Cultural & Educational Center, 107 Suffolk St., Lower East Side
When: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Lower East Side Preservation Initiative’s two-evening event starts Thursday with a talk about New York’s street art scene in the past and present by photographer Yoav Litvin, who published the book “Outdoor Gallery – New York City,” and Al Diaz, an “old school” graffiti writer known as BOMB1 and an artistic partner of Jean Michel Basquiat. Cost is $15 per evening, $25 for both events for non-LESPI members; $12 per evening and $20 for both nights for LESPI members.

Johnny Cash Tribute Band at Astoria Park

Where: The big lawn at Astoria Park
When: 7 p.m.

Groove to your favorite tunes by the Man in Black, performed by Michael Patrick’s Ring of Fire Band. The free show is part of a weekly waterfront concert series in the park hosted by the Central Astoria Local Development Coalition.

One Story presents: Calvin Baker in conversation with Hannah Tinti

Where: Community Bookstore, 143 Seventh Ave., Park Slope
When: 7 p.m.

At this free event, One Story magazine editor Hannah Tinti talks to author Calvin Baker about his new book, “Grace,” which tells the story of a war correspondent who wants to find beauty again.

River and Blues, featuring Henry Butler

Where: Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Park, 20 Battery Place in Battery Park City
When: 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Enjoy a summer evening listening to the blues while the sun sets over the Hudson River. Picnicing is encouraged. Jazz musician Henry Butler has been described as the greatest proponent of the classic New Orleans piano tradition. The event is free.
