WEST VILLAGE — Officers who have been cracking down on graffiti in the Village caught a 35-year-old man putting up illegal posters for a high-priced French fashion company, police said.

The man was pasting posters that read "LET THEM PAINT #SANDROBASTILLE" on a city-owned street light, police said. A nearby clothing boutique, Sandro, was running a campaign for Bastille Day.

Sandro's corporate office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The company is based in Paris, but has several stores in New York City.

Police said the man, who was wearing dirty, torn clothes, a baseball hat and blue sneakers, told them he "put up stuff at a couple of spots tonight."

The man was spotted by a member of the 6th Precinct's anti-crime unit, which has been making a special effort to crack down on graffiti in the neighborhood, police said.

The anti-crime officer saw the man pasting the poster on the bottom of a lamp post at the southwest corner of West 11th Street and Bleecker Street about 3:35 a.m. on July 11, according to the police report.

The man had two more posters in the back left pocket of his pants, police said.

The man was arrested and charged with making graffiti and possession of graffiti instruments. He is due back in court on Sept. 10. His lawyer did not immediately return a voicemail message.
