TRIBECA — For a close-up view of some the best beach volleyball players in the world, head to TriBeCa's Pier 25 and Pier 26 this weekend.

That's where the Association of Volleyball Professionals is hosting its first ever men's and women's beach tournament in Manhattan from, July 16 through July 20.

Thursday morning, Olympic hopefuls were battling it out on the sandy courts at Pier 25, during the AVP's day of qualifying rounds.

Crowds had gathered on the pier, taking in the sunshine, and the heated volleyball competitions.

"This is awesome to watch," said Tory Edelman, who works in the area and stopped by to check out the matches. "I love volleyball, and play in and indoor team — this is a great way to get more eyeballs on the sport."

On Thursday, only men's teams were competing in TriBeca, while the women's qualifiers were being held in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Starting Friday, the whole competition will be in TriBeCa, and some big names in the beach volleyball world are slated to hit the sand for the elimination rounds, which start at 9 a.m. and end at about 6 p.m.

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, as well as Olympic gold medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, and Olympic silver medalists April Ross and Jennifer Kessy are on the roster for the competition.

Through the weekend, there will be drinks, food and games for visitors to the competition. General admission to watch is free, but there's also some VIP seating that's still available for purchase, which ranges from $35 to $450.

The competition will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

“We’re tremendously excited to bring the AVP to Hudson River Park in New York City this summer,” Donald Sun, the AVP’s managing partner, said. “It’s such an iconic sports town, and we’re thrilled to give New York City’s passionate sports fans an opportunity to enjoy our sport — and the incredible athleticism of the AVP’s amazing players — in their own backyard."

Along with money, winners of the tournament get to keep moving ahead in national competitions, as they fight to get to the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
