MANHATTAN — A man punched a woman in the face and fractured her jaw in an attack that police are investigating as an anti-Muslim hate crime Saturday night, according to the NYPD.

The man heard the 19-year-old woman speaking in a foreign language in front of 109 East Broadway near Pike Street at about 8:40 p.m. on July 11, police said. He accused her of speaking negatively about him and the two got into an argument, with the suspect making anti-Muslim comments, an NYPD spokesman said.

He then spit in her face, punched her and fled up Eldridge Street, according to the NYPD.

The woman suffered a fractured jaw and was taken to Beth Israel Medical Center in stable condition.

The suspect is described as standing nearly 6 feet tall and wearing a dark hat, dark pants, a dark shirt and carrying a plastic bag, police say.
