LOWER EAST SIDE — Gouverneur Health medical center is launching a new farmers market run by teens on Thursday in an effort to help local residents live healthier lives.

Starting at noon, fresh vegetables, fruits, juices and flowers will be available at the health center, located at 227 Madison St., until 5 p.m., according to the city’s Health and Hospitals Corporation, which runs the facility. The market will run every Thursday until Nov. 19.

“Farmers markets directly support HHC’s efforts to build healthy communities and we’re very happy to keep expanding the program to bring affordable food options to more and more neighborhoods,” said HHC President Dr. Ram Raju in a statement.

The farm stand is part of GrowNYC’s Youthmarket program, which partners with community organizations to hire local teens to sell the fresh produce provided by Greenmarket Co., a local food hub and distribution program that purchases goods from regional farms.

Henry Street Settlement employed the teenage staff of the Gouverneur Health location, which is one of more than a dozen Youthmarkets citywide, said Olivia Blanchflower, GrowNYC's director of wholesale and distribution

Shoppers can pay for fresh produce using EBT/SNAP, Health Bucks, Green Checks and WIC coupons, according to HHC, which runs 11 farmers markets at health centers across the city.
