WINDSOR TERRACE — The long-awaited Key Food grocery store at 589 Prospect Ave. will open on July 17, the owner told DNAinfo New York.

"It's been a long time," said owner Joe Zahriyeh. "Thank God we're going to open up for the community."

The store will open at 7 a.m. to welcome shoppers who've been without a full-scale supermarket for nearly three years. There will be a grand opening celebration at 5 p.m. on July 20, Zahriyeh said.

A Key Food at the location closed in July 2012, leaving locals in a shopping lurch.

Initially the national pharmacy chain Walgreens was slated to take over the spot, but neighbors protested and convinced Walgreens to share the space with a new Key Food.

The brand new Walgreens opened in October 2014, but progress was slow on the new Key Food store.

Zahriyeh said he owed a debt to community members who helped him navigate a challenging building process, especially former Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, State Senator James Brennan and City Councilman Brad Lander.

"The whole community helped. Without them, this wouldn’t have happened," Zahriyeh said.

The new grocery store, called Windsor Farms, will have a selection of organic produce, prepared foods, fresh meat and seafood, and an on-site kitchen cooking prepared foods.

The store will offer free home delivery and online ordering with Instacart, Zahriyeh said.

Zahriyeh said prices at the store will be affordable, in line with other Key Food stores. Zahriyeh owns five other Key Food stores in Queens.

The loss of the Windsor Terrace Key Food in 2010 prompted locals to launch their own grocery co-op modeled after the Park Slope Food Co-op. It opened in March at 825 Caton Ave.
