WOW Festival (Women Of the World) is a four-day collaboration between Harlem’s Apollo Theater and London-based arts center The Southbank Centre. The Festival features performances, talks, mentoring sessions, music, film and debate, in celebration of women and girls from all over of the world. A presentation Friday, “Girls Town Hall” featuring Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen Michelle Tan and The City College of New York President Lisa Staiano-Coico, offers middle and high school-aged students a three-part educational program. Friday night is the release party for "Organized By Title," a book of global live-action karaoke photographs shot by fashion photographer Ben Rayner. It kicks off at 8 p.m. with the release party, then arts collective CKTV will premiere and perform with their new karaoke videos. From 11 p.m., join in for some audience participation karaoke. Northside Festival is entering its most manic phase with dozens of bands playing around Brooklyn Saturday including a free show (RSVP here) at McCarren Park in Williamsburg, featuring Against Me!, Mitski and Cayetana. Gates open at 2:30 p.m. Other venues include outdoor space 50 Kent Ave. where from 5 p.m. Saturday night you can catch Best Coast, Built to Spill, Alvvays and Bully. Head to Baby’s All Right, 146 Broadway in Williamsburg (shows from 2 p.m.) and Bar Matchless, 557 Manhattan Ave., Williamsburg, (2 p.m. start) and lots more.
On the occasion of its 10th Anniversary, Michael Arenella is planning the grandest Jazz Age Lawn Party to date. Once again, the location is beautiful Governors Island, and performers include Arenella’s Dreamland Orchestra, the Art Deco spectacle of The Dreamland Follies and many other Jazz Age inspired artists. Hit the streets of the Lower East Side as the famous downtown neighborhood turns on the charm, showcasing the best in local food, fashion and music. Lower EAT Side is a fun street party celebrating local businesses and communities with dozens of dining options, DJ’s, and activities including hula hooping, face painting, giant jingo and matchmaking. Orchard Street between Delancey and Irvington, Lower East Side. From 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. Free.
The American Black Film Festival is dedicated to showcasing quality films and television content by and about people of African descent. Wrapping up this evening with “the Best Of The ABFF” Awards Ceremony, the four day festival is the nation’s largest gathering of Black film and TV enthusiasts.
