Thief Cuts Through Wall to Steal From Prospect Heights Restaurant: Police

PROSPECT HEIGHTS — A thief used a kitchen knife to cut through a wall and swipe $856 from a restaurant while it was closed for the night, according to a police report.

The owner of Ideya on Carlton Avenue and Park Place told police that the thief cut through the wall to her office, then pried open a file cabinet and stole an envelope containing $856 in cash sometime between midnight and 9 a.m. on May 4, according to the report.

Video showed two employees enter the restaurant on the night of the crime but did not show the theft, according to the report. A representative for the restaurant could not be reached immediately for comment on Thursday.

Other notable crimes in the 78th Precinct included the following, with all details drawn from police reports:

► A thief broke into Little Cupcake Bakeshop on Vanderbilt Avenue near St. Mark's Avenue through a side window about 4 a.m. on May 9 and took $3,530 in cash, a safe and a cash register, police said. Cameras caught the crime on video, and pliers were left at the scene. No arrests had been made as of Thursday. The owner could not be reached immediately for comment.

► A 29-year-old woman was trying on clothes at the Old Navy in the Atlantic Center mall when she left her iPhone 6 on a counter on May 3 at 5 p.m. The phone's case was also a wallet containing her ID and credit cards. While shopping later at Target, she realized she was missing her phone. It was gone when she returned.

►  A $500 Specialized mountain bike was stolen from an apartment building on Carroll Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues about 4:30 a.m. on May 9. A resident heard breaking glass and went downstairs to find the bike missing. Someone had used a snow shovel to break the glass on the door in the vestibule, leaving blood on the door, police said.

► A 33-year-old shopper at Modell's on Flatbush and Atlantic avenues had her iPhone 6 and a case containing credit cards stolen after she left it on a shelf while she walked around to browse the store on May 8.

► A 24-year-old shopper at Mandee had her wallet stolen out of her purse on May 8 about 2:54 p.m.

► A thief broke into an apartment on Bergen Street between Vanderbilt and Carlton avenues on May 6 at 6 p.m. and stole a $700 Schwinn racing bike that was left unlocked in the front hallway.

► A thief broke into a Frito Lay delivery van and stole a $300 printer while the van was parked briefly on Fifth Avenue near 11th Street on May 6 at 8 a.m.

► A 60-year-old employee at a substance abuse and methadone clinic on 12th Street and Second Ave. had a backpack full of personal property stolen from a cabinet at the clinic on May 5 about 3 p.m. The stolen bag contained a wallet, MetroCard, stethoscope, a library card and library books about trauma and recovery and slow cooking.

Overall, major crimes in the 78th Precinct have dropped 9.75 percent this year compared to the same period in 2014, according to the latest statistics from the NYPD.
