HARLEM — An 18-year-old man was fatally shot in the head early Friday morning, police said.

Deiondre Viera was shot near St. Nicholas Avenue and West 111th Street, blocks from his home, shortly after 2:30 a.m., according to the NYPD. He was taken to Harlem Hospital, but could not be saved, police said.

"I heard five shots. They were very loud," said one nearby resident, Eveira, who declined to give her last name. "I've heard gunshots before but never that loud. It sounded like it was in my bedroom."

Viera's girlfriend, Nala Wilder, 16, said the teen was generous and loved to play basketball.

"He was a good boyfriend," she said. "He was helpful. He always shared."

A relative of Viera's was too distraught to speak to reporters.

"To me, he was a good kid," the grieving woman said. "That was my baby."

There have been no arrests, police said.
