Friday, May 8
NYCxDESIGN is New York City's official celebration of design and related disciplines. The festival spans all five boroughs and includes installations, talks, trade shows and open studios. BKLYN Designs, kicking off this weekend ($15) at Brooklyn Expo Center in Greenpoint, is particularly busy, featuring six seminars Friday and more over the weekend. Friday’s schedule begins with “New Face of Affluence” at 12 p.m., with Dwell President Michela O’Connor Abrams exploring the profile of the affluent design-centric consumer and the impact of their influence and purchasing power across all industries. Other NYCxDESIGN events include the Collective Design Fair at Moynihan Station, which begins May 13 and Frieze New York on Randall's Island, which kicks off on May 14).

Saturday, May 9
In the early 1970s, a musical genre was born in the neighborhoods of the South Bronx. Join the folks at the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts as they welcome hip hop legends including Kurtis Blow, Rob Base, Sugarhill Gang, Biz Markie, Grandmaster Melle Mel and Scorpio of The Furious 5 for a special throwback concert to celebrate the 38th anniversary of the legendary Disco Fever Nightclub in the Bronx. The concert also marks the beginning of Bronx Week, which presents a full calendar of events through to May 17 celebrating the borough. 250 Bedford Park Blvd., West Bronx. Tickets from $45.

Norwegian writing sensation Karl Ove Knausgaard is in the city this week for a string of events to promote the fourth installment of his epic "My Struggle" autobiographical book series. The new book finds an 18-year-old Karl Ove in a tiny fishing village in northern Norway, where he has been hired as a schoolteacher and is living on his own for the first time. At 8 p.m. Friday, Knausgaard is appearing at 92Y (1395 Lexington Ave., Upper East Side) in conversation with author and critic Rivka Galchen, 10:30 a.m. Saturday he’ll sign books at the Strand Book Store, 828 Broadway, Union Square, and from 1 p.m. Saturday he’ll be a part of the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Print Screen program, hosting a screening of Lars von Trier’s Dogme 95 classic film, "The Idiots." $18., Francesca Beale Theater, 144 W. 65th St., Upper West Side.

Sunday, May 10 (Mother’s Day)
China, Through The Looking Glass,” a new exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum, explores the impact of Chinese aesthetics on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. 1000 Fifth Avenue (at 82nd Street), Upper East Side. $25. 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

With the weather warming up, it’s a great time to explore Brooklyn’s popular food and craft markets. Smorgasburg, Brooklyn’s outdoor food market is up and running from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. over the weekend — Saturdays are held in Williamsburg at the corner of Kent Ave. and North 7th Street, and Sundays are held at Brooklyn Bridge Park — Pier 5. You can find Brooklyn Flea market in Fort Greene on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays in Williamsburg at 50 Kent Ave, between North 11th and 12th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free.
