QUEENS — A dead dolphin was found Wednesday morning in Far Rockaway, city officials said.

The dolphin, which appeared to have injuries and blood around its head, was found by city employees, who were collecting water samples near Beach 38th Street, sources said.

It was not immediately clear why the animal, identified by experts as a common dolphin, died.

A spokeswoman for the Parks Department said that the dolphin has been removed from the beach and taken to a secure location where the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, an organization that aids injured marine animals, will further examine the carcass.

Experts from the Riverhead Foundation said that the species is fairly common in the area known for its rich marine wildlife.

Recently, a seal was spotted in Rockaway Park, although experts said that at this time of year many seals migrate north, while and humpback whales arrive from more southern regions.
