Mobile Pet Adoption Van Coming To Harlem's State Office Building Saturday

HARLEM — Cats and dogs are going to take over the State Office Building.

The ASPCA is hosting an adoption event Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. at 163 West 125th St.

Families will be able to give dogs like Poncho, a 2-year-old Chihuahua, and Riley, a 2-and-a-half-year-old pit bull, a new home. Only a select group of dogs and cats are going to make the trip to Harlem.

"We choose the animals based on a number of factors, but a critical component is that they have to be comfortable with travel," said Eileen Hanavan, manager of the shelter's Mobile Adoption program. "Not every animal is comfortable in a moving vehicle, so we typically choose the most resilient ones, and the ones who could use the extra exposure."

The program makes it easier for families to adopt by bringing the animals into their communities, she added.

People interested in adopting on-site must be 21 or older and should bring a government-issued ID, proof of address and contact information for a personal reference. Adoption fees vary from $50 to $125 depending on the age of the pet.

There will also be a a special mobile crime lab that the NYPD's animal cruelty uses for forensic analysis in animal abuse cases. The police department teamed up with the shelter to combat animal cruelty about a year and a half ago, according to ASPCA.

Pet owners will be able to sign up for spay and neuter services and get information about how to care for their animals.
