ROCKAWAY PARK — One of Coney Island's biggest boosters is bringing her sea-inspired clothing shop to Rockaway, with plans for a "glitter bar," sunset roller skating parties and beachside hula hooping classes.

Lola Star, who runs two boutiques on Coney Island, is set to open her third in Rockaway Park at 174 Beach 116th St. in May, she said.

Star, who opened her first shop in 2000 and was integral in the fight to save the seaside resort from developers, said she instantly fell in love with Rockaway when she first visited.

"Coney Island and Rockaway are kind of cousins in a weird kind of way," she said. "They both have this similar kind of magnet and magic to them."

Star's new 850-square-foot shop is her largest, and will be stocked with her Rockaway clothing line along with other beach necessities and accessories.

"I like to find items that have a magical quality about them," she said, including "mermaid treasures," beach toys, and ukuleles.

Her new shop will feature a "glitter bar" where you can bedazzle T-shirts or get glitter tattoos, and she'll  host Showgirl makeup classes where guests can have pin-up photos taken at the store.

There will also be a hula hoop instructor who will host weekly parties at the beach Sunday mornings at 11 a.m.

And Star, who created the Dreamland Roller Rink in the old Childs Building on the boardwalk from 2008 to 2010 and now hosts roller parties in Prospect Park, wants to get those parties rolling into Rockaway, too.

"A roller disco part as the sun sets and the breeze blows in off the ocean... it would just be fantastic," she said. Plans for those parties have not been finalized, she said, but she is working on a grand opening party in May that will feature Coney Island Lager beer and vegan treats.

Star's first introduction to Rockaway came at two street festivals last year, and she's also designing a t-shirt for the next Taste of Rockaway event on April 25.

"It's an incredible community and I'm excited to be a part of it," she said.
