COBBLE HILL — A group of business and property owners along Smith and Court streets are hosting a clean-up event for the busy corridors on Saturday, in hopes of drawing support for the area’s proposed Business Improvement District.

Volunteers, including the business and property owners, can “wash away the trash, dirt and grime of the past winter” between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on April 18, the prospective Court & Smith Street BID said in an email.

“We’re just looking to scrub the neighborhood clean,” said Tom Williams, a member of the steering committee, adding that Atlantic Maintenance will provide equipment and workers to assist volunteers.

Conversations around the BID’s launch began several years ago but those efforts were finally ramped up last April.

While the BID does not officially exist as yet, the group is hoping the clean-up will give locals a taste of what they can expect once the organization is up and running, Williams said.

Members of the group, which primarily consists of residents, small business and property owners along the streets, will also be available to talk about the proposed BID.

The committee decided to host the day of cleaning after locals in the area highlighted the importance of “sanitation and maintenance” through a survey that was circulated last year, Williams said.

Safety, decorations and streetscaping also ranked highly, he added.

The group is currently in the process of gathering support for the BID. Once members have the necessary backing from locals — that they hope to have before the end of the year — they will submit their application to the city for approval.

Free T-shirts will be provided to all volunteers. Email courtsmithbidsc@gmail.com for more information.
