CIVIC CENTER — The NYPD detective caught screaming at an Uber driver in a YouTube video posted on Monday has been identified and is being investigated by the Civilian Complaint Review Board, officials and sources said.
A spokesman for the NYPD confirmed on Tuesday that the department had identified the man in the video as one of their own, but refused to give out any identifying information.
A spokewoman for the CCRB confirmed that the board was following up on a complaint filed about the incident, but also would not provide information.
But sources said the irate man in the video is Detective Patrick Cherry with the Joint Terrorism Task Force, which has a headquarters near the West Side Highway and West 14th Street, where the YouTube video was filmed.
In the video, filmed by a passenger in the backseat of the car, Cherry berates the Uber driver with an obscenity-laced tirade, and demands to know how long the driver, who speaks with an accent, has been in the United States.
Cherry thrusts what appeared to be a summons at the driver, but was really the driver's license and registration.
Cherry did not respond to an email and a voicemail requesting comment.
Advocates who work with livery car drivers said the verbal assault is not an isolated incident.
"This is a regular occurrence for drivers," said Ali Najmi, an attorney with the black car union United We Stand. "This is one that happens to be caught on video."
