NEW YORK CITY — South African comedian Trevor Noah will take over "The Daily Show" after longtime host Jon Stewart leaves later this year, Comedy Central announced on Monday.

Noah, who's made just a handful of appearances on the show, will take the helm at the station's flagship satirical news program when Stewart steps down.

Michele Ganeless, the network's president, made the announcement Monday.

In February, Stewart said he would be retiring from the show that he's hosted for 16 years.

Noah, who was born in South Africa to a South African mother and a European father, has become one of that nation's top comedians, even hosting his own late-night talk show, "Tonight With Trevor Noah."

He's appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and the “Late Show with David Letterman” and done stand-up in venues across the world, cracking jokes about race, tacos and everything in between.

“It’s an honor to follow Jon Stewart,” Noah said in a statement. “In my brief time with the show they’ve made me feel so welcome. I’m excited to get started and work with such a fantastic group of people.”

The exact date of the switchover from Stewart to Noah is not yet clear, but will happen at some time this year, Ganeless said.
