EAST VILLAGE — Locals will see an influx of caped crusaders next month as comic book and literary aficionados descend on an H.P. Lovecraft-inspired bar on Avenue B near East Fourth Street.

Lovecraft, a steampunk bar, is inviting its customers to dress up as their favorite superhero to “battle” Cthulhu, the monstrous deity featured in the American author’s work. The event, which will take place on April 17, will include live music, free karaoke and a costume contest, organizers said.

The party will also include performances by magicians Robert Corvo, Brandon K. Williams and the Bizarre Magic of Drew, said Chelsey Pendock from BARistas, an event-planning firm that works with bars.

Pendock said the acts were a hit during previous events she helped organize at Lovecraft.

“They stuffed screwdrivers in their faces and they swallow swords and it’s just so out of this world – like, cool, creepy stuff that people thought were entertaining,” she said.

Admission is free and customers who arrive before 7 p.m. will receive a free shot, she added. Customers can also take advantage of drink specials and try out one of the bar’s numerous liquor infusions, like lavender and rosemary vodka, apple-cinnamon bourbon, and clementine and lime-flavored tequila.

The bar, which opened in August last year, will also offer absinthe cocktails and a new food menu, organizers said.

The party’s activities, combined with Lovecraft’s interesting décor — which includes tin-pressed ceilings, bubble tube lamps and sculptures of a Cthulhu — should make it an interesting and fun night, Pendock said

“I think it’s going to be a blast,” she said. “Anytime that there’s costumes and a people get to be fun and silly, it’s always a good time.”
