GRASMERE — Crates filled with hundreds of live chickens fell off the back of a truck onto a busy Staten Island street Wednesday morning, police said.
The 30 crates packed with up to 200 chickens were dropped onto the corner of Hylan Boulevard and Steuben Street at 7:15 a.m., police on the scene said. The driver didn't realize they'd fallen.
Police loaded the crates onto the back of an NYPD trailer — with some fowl trying to make a getaway — and drove them to the 122 Precinct.
They said the owner of the chickens, a company identified as Road Enterprises, had been contacted and would pick them up at the station house. Attempts to contact the owner for this story were unsuccessful.
