Monday, February 9
Grime and Glory: A History of Prospect Park,” a presentation by urban planner Patrick Lamson-Hall, will illustrate the history of Prospect Park, from its original conception as a rival to Manhattan’s Central Park, through its glory days into the 1940s, to its decline and near-collapse, and its stunning rebirth. Tuesday, February 10
Tell It Like It Is: Black Independents in New York, 1968 – 1986” is a film festival representing highlights of New York–based black independent film makers, who produced films in a time when minority film production was not supported and frequently suppressed. Tuesday night catch “Losing Ground” a 1982 feature by Kathleen Collins, one of the first feature films written and directed by a black woman. “Losing Ground” never enjoyed a theatrical release and is described in the New Yorker as “a nearly lost masterwork. It’s the only feature that Collins, who died in 1988, at the age of forty-six, ever made. 3:30 p.m., Francesca Beale Theater, 144 W. 65th St., Upper West Side. $14

Thursday, February 12
Cartoonists Matt Groening and Lynda Barry first met at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington in the mid 1970s, and both published comics in the school magazine. Tonight Groening, the creator of "The Simpsons," and Barry, creator of the seminal comic strip Ernie Pook’s "Comeek," come together for “Love, Hate & Comics — The Friendship That Would Not Die” where they’ll discuss their 40 year careers in comics.
