CHINATOWN  — A man who was acting erratically inside Manhattan's criminal courthouse bit a court officer who was trying to give him a ticket, officials said.

The officer saw the man start acting out inside 100 Centre St., near Leonard Street, about 10 a.m. and tried to calm him down, but couldn't, according to the FDNY and the head of the court officers' union, Dennis Quirk.

The officer moved to issue a ticket, but was then bitten by the man, Quirk said.

The man, who was not in court on a case, was arrested at the scene, union officials said.

The officer was taken to Lower Manhattan Hospital as a precaution because the bite punctured skin skin and officials worried about any potential infection, Quirk said.

The biter was taken to Bellevue in police custody, court officials said.

Neither of the two men's identities were immediately released.
