11-Year-Old Girl Stops Thief from Stealing Her Cellphone on Walk to School

DITMARS — A man tried to steal an 11-year-old girl's cellphone as she walked to school in Astoria, but the victim managed to pull it back from him, police said.

The victim was walking near Ditmars Boulevard and 28th Street at 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 20 when the suspect walked up to her and tried to grab her phone, according to the NYPD.

The girl pulled away, started to scream and ran, police said. The suspect then fled. The victim wasn't injured, according to police.

Police described the suspect, captured on surveillance video, as 30 years old and 5-foot-9.
