NEW YORK CITY — Frigid temperatures and snow will make for a messy commute and slippery driving conditions on Tuesday, officials said.

The city issued the first snow alert of the New Year with 10-degree temperatures and a mixture of snow and sleet expected to begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Only an inch of snow is likely to accumulate throughout the day though, according to the National Weather Service.

“The most impact would be the timing of the snow," said Tim Morrin, a spokesman for the National Weather Service. "It looks as though it’s starting to develop during the morning commute time. With temperatures below freezing, there really could be some slippery driving conditions.”

Heavier flurries are forecasted for between 11 a.m. and 5p.m., with minimal accumulation. Temperatures are expected to dip to 10 degrees on Monday night and hover between 10 and 15 degrees throughout Tuesday.

“It does not look like a very impressive system regarding snow amounts,” Morrin said. “We’re really not anticipating amounts of snow that would need a lot of plowing.”

The Department of Sanitation is still gearing up with salt spreaders, plows and tire chains as a precaution, said DSNY spokeswoman Kathy Dawkins.

“We’ll be out there making sure the roads are clear and try to address any icy conditions,” Dawkins said.

“If you’re dealing with mass transit, just make sure you check the trains are running on time and if you’re driving, drive safely.”
