Got some little ones who are home from school this week? Show them how to get to Sesame Street (the exhibit) at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. “Somebody Come and Play: 45 Years of 'Sesame Street'” will display more than 250 artifacts from the landmark PBS children’s series. For those who consider New Year’s Eve "amateur night," New Year’s Eve Eve may be the perfect time to celebrate the end of another long 12 months. That’s why vintage party producers from The Salon are throwing their annual New Year’s Eve Eve holiday bash at the DL on the Lower East Side. Dance along to the live big bands on each of the event space’s three floors and enjoy burlesque and boylesque performances and 1920s go-go and tap dancers, plus take free dance lessons at 7:30 p.m. VIP tickets ($89 in advance and $95 day-of) include a two-hour open bar and access to the VIP room. It’s the one night of the year when it makes sense to commit to a single event for an entire evening. On New Year’s Eve, there are hundreds of all-inclusive ticketed parties where you can ring in 2015. Those who prefer to shun Times Square, particularly on this night, can enjoy the bright lights and countdown cheer out at Coney Island where there will be fireworks, performances from the Coney Island Sideshow and a “simulated” ball drop from the Parachute Jump.

If you didn’t attend the festivities the night before, make it down to Coney Island on New Year’s Day for the annual Polar Bear Club Swim. For a suggested donation of $20, witness hundreds of freezing adults as they dive into the cold winter sea. Proceeds go to Camp Sunshine, a charity that supports children with life-threatening illnesses.
