MARINERS HARBOR — A passenger tried to rob a cabbie at gunpoint on Christmas Eve — but the driver hit the gas and sped off before handing over any cash, police said.

The 59-year-old livery driver picked up the suspect on the corner of Van Pelt and Forest avenues on Dec. 24 around 12:15 p.m., police said.

The cabbie drove him several blocks to 84 Maple Parkway, where the suspect exited the car, pointed a gun at the driver and demanded money, police said.

But instead of forking over any loot, the driver stepped on the gas and fled, police said. There were no injuries, and it was unclear if the suspect fired any shots.

Police described the suspect as between 16 and 18 years old, last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with dark stripes.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
